  • Promoting Brand Name- MODI

Narendra Damodardas Modi (Commonly known as Narendra Modi or just Modi )– the Member of Parliament from Varanasi-is the 15th and current Prime Minister of India (In office since May 2014). Modi, a leader of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), previously served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001-20014.

Narendra Modi’s election campaign in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls is an example of how to prepare and successfully implement a marketing and branding campaign. His image and face to face communication or messaging have overshadowed all other brands – even that of his own party i.e. BJP.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) left no stone unturned in promoting the brand name -“MODI”. BJP started using online marketing services like social media even before 2009 general elections which they lost. Many Famous and senior BJP leaders like Sushma Swaraj, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Of course Narendra Modi, etc… are on social networking sites.

Prime Minister MODI is the most famous and active politician on social media. Narendra Modi was joined Facebook and Twitter in 2009 and was the first politician to use Google Plus. Though he has millions and millions of followers of his twitter and Facebook, his very active on YouTube as well with more than 1500 videos. Branding Modi was not an easy task, but with digital marketing services all in hype these days, it became very easy for his team to market Modi using Internet marketing and using each and every aspect of social media. The digital team of Modi wanted to promote Modi as brand not only for state but also for the entire nation’s audience.

Digital Marketing proved out to be the right tool for connecting Narendra Modi with public and to promote him and spread his political message by using various online marketing strategies and social networking. Digital Marketing helped Modi to connect with the voters for making political decisions and also benefited the voters as they could find Narendra Modi’s view on various themes and political fights, biography, programme and agenda’s, interests, photos and uploaded videos.

Modi’s website and blog narendramodi.in is well designed and thoroughly updated. The smartest move by BJP was to promote Modi as a face on various platforms rather than the party itself. They ensured a strong online presence across social media channels like Facebook, twitter, YouTube etc… to keep the voters connected. 17.9 million fans of Narendra Modi could track each and every movement of his during the campaign through Facebook. After Obama, Modi is the most followed politician on twitter with 4.85 million active followers. Even on YouTube he has near about 1.6 million followers and 18 million views of 3400+ uploaded videos of speeches and interviews.

Digital Marketing strategies like official websites, ROI, Display Ads, Video Streaming, Social Media, Email and SMS, CRM, Mobile marketing etc… were used effectively to provide database for information sharing, donations, social and political engagements etc… Let us talk about the famous and the latest marketing strategy of Narendra Modi- “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” campaign.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 2nd October 2014, launched a National level campaign by the name Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, at Rajghat, New Delhi, where Prime Minister Modi himself broom and cleaned a road and also requested the citizens of India to join this campaign. This campaign is known to be India’s biggest ever cleanliness drive and around 3 million people have already joined this campaign.

On one hand where through TV media Narendra Modi realized the need to start this campaign, for clean and green India, digital marketing on the other hand helped the Prime Minister to spread awareness about this campaign to entire nation. Not only the P.M. himself, but even the topmost actors, sportsperson, politicians etc.. like Salman Khan, Hritik Roshan, Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Ambani, Sachin Tendulkar, Saina Nehwal, Baba Ramdev, Arvind Kejriwal and many more joined and participated in the campaign. All of them along with Mr. Modi were very active on social media sites like Facebook, twitter, YouTube and also used other marketing services like emails, mobile SMS and email, blogs etc.. to show their dedication and to pump up the audience for the same.

  • Arvind Kejriwal and his Political campaigns

Aam Aadmi Party i.e. AAP, an Indian political party , launched on 26th November 2012, came into existence due to difference in opinion between the activists Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal regarding whether to or not to politicize the movement “India Against Corruption” which had been demanding a Jan Lokpal Bill since 2011.

Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of Aam Aadmi Party and a former civil servant, is an Indian Politician who was the 7th Chief Minister of Delhi from 28th December 2013- 14 February 2014. He worked for the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) as a joint commissioner in the Income Tax Department from 1995-2006. In 2006 he resigned from the position of Joint commissioner in Income Tax Department.

As an activist Kejriwal believed that “Changes begin with small things”, and in 1999 he found a movement named Parivartan, that focused on assisting citizens in income tax, electricity and food ration matters in parts of Delhi. In 2006, Arvind Kejriwal was awarded with Ramon Magsaysay award for Emergent Leadership. The Award money received in 2006 from the Ramon Magsaysay award was donated by Kejriwal in the Public Cause Research Foundation , which was formed by Manish Sisodia, abhinandan Sekhri and Arvind Kejriwal in December 2006.

Kejriwal established AAP in November 2012 so as to fight against corruption and in 2013 he became the Chief Minister of Delhi by defeating 3 times Chief Minister of Delhi Ms.Sheila Dikshit of the Indian National Congress. From 2012- 2013, Arvind Kejriwal became the fifth most talked Indian politician on social media channels. Prior to his resignation as Chief Minister of Delhi on 14th Feburary,2014, Kejriwal on 25th March, 2014 agreed to contest a seat in 2014 Lok Sabha elections against BJP prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi from Varanasi, but lost to Modi.

This politician likes to call himself as a common man, but he is very well known and searched man on internet. Though Arvind Kejriwal and his team interacted with people directly by walking down the streets etc., but his is well connected with his public and voters through Online marketing services. Kejriwal and his Party selected the right audience, and the right ways to communicate. Though his communication strategy included door to door publicity , pamphlets and posters etc., but he also made a good and intelligent use of Social media as well to spread his messages and ideas all across the nation.

For instance, his Facebook account has more than 5 million fans and he very cleverly chose an eye catching name “AapKaArvind” for his account. The About section of his FB account reads: “˜This is Arvind Kejriwal’s official page to talk about issues related to corruption, ineffective governance and solution to these problems in form of AAP.” Besides Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitley, he is one of the three politicians to have a donate button on his Facebook page. Though this man doesn’t responds to tweets on twitter often , but he makes sure that his presence is being felt.

A search for Arvind Kejriwal on Google or Yahoo etc., will introduce you to the current activities and events surrounding the common man, followed by his Facebook page, Wikipedia page and Twitter account. Other than the Aam Aadmi Party’s official website, Arvind Kejriwal shares most of his thoughts, party and policy-related information through his Twitter and Facebook accounts. It was due to all these Online marketing strategies of the Aam Aadmi Party, that Kejriwal had a good support from NRI’s and that party could gather the funds for the party.

Arvind Kejriwal has extensively used social media to shape his identity and image. In the 2014 general elections, three major political parties were competing against each other and fighting a cut throat battle. In such a scenario, the Aam Aadmi Party leader has sustained his campaigning using Social Media.

He keeps his conversation simple and straight in his tweets and posts. His strategy of being personal in tweets is indeed striking the right chord with his followers. Overall, Arvind Kejriwal stolen the fame on social media by utilizing the power of digital media to keep the matter completely transparent with his voters by updating all the details of the party and their campaigns along with interesting videos and photographs.
